Question of the Day: How Would You Have Voted on the Coliseum Proposal?

Nassau county voters overwhelmingly nixed a $400 million bond to build a new Nassau Coliseum, baseball stadium and sports complex yesterday. Would you have done the same?

A referendum to approve a $400 million bond to rebuild the Nassau Coliseum, as well as a new baseball stadium and sports complex was by Nassau County residents on Monday.

Critics of the plan, from local Democrats to Tea Partiers, argued that the financially strapped county (whose finances are currently under the control of an outside agency, NIFA) couldn't afford to spend what would ultimately cost nearly $800 million after debt service to build a new arena for the New York Islanders' billionaire owner Charles Wang.

Proponents of the deal, including Republican Supervisor Ed Mangano and union workers, countered that the new arena would pay for itself using increased revenue-sharing, create new jobs, and ultimately cost the taxpayers just over $13 a year in new taxes.

With the proposal shot down, Wang may well follow through on his threat to "explore all options" and has stated the Islanders will not play in the crumbling Coliseum after their lease is up in 2015 if a new arena is not in place. Mangano said this is "not the end, but a beginning," and added that he will work with investors to come up with another solution for the site.

Although this is a Nassau issue, we want to know: if this situation was in Suffolk, how would you have voted? Would you have approved a Suffolk Coliseum, or voted down the proposal as well? Let us know in the comments below.
