Report: Riverhead Biologists Performing Necropsy on Beached Whale

Whale found washed ashore Wednesday on Atlantic Beach.

A team of biologists from traveled out to Atlantic Beach on Thursday to perform a necropsy on a beached finback whale, according to Five Towns Patch.

The whale, measured at 41 feet long, was reportedly found Wednesday on the shore of the south shore Nassau County village.

“Our team is out there right now doing a necropsy on the animal and trying to determine what are the reasons why it died,” said Rob DiGiovanni, director and senior biologist at The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. “We believe we’ll be done by today, unless anything changes.”
