Report: Riverhead Marine Biologists Say Beached Whale Hit by Ship

Beached finback whale was found in Atlantic Beach yesterday,

Biologists from the  performed a necropsy on Thursday on a 48-foot (previously reported at 41 feet) finback whale which was found beached in Atlantic Beach, according to Five Towns Patch.

The scientists reportedly found that the whale's tail had been severed and the whale sustained several shark bites that penetrated the blubber and bone. However scientists determined that a strike from a ship, which bruised the chest cavity of the male whale, caused its death.

Five Towns Patch writer Raina Russo provided an interesting first-person account of her experience covering the beached whale since Wednesday.
