Report: Riverhead Marine Foundation ID's 'Mystery Fish'

Atlantic sturgeon found near Brooklyn Bridge on Manhattan side of East River.

Researchers at Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation identified on Saturday a 6- to 7-foot-long fishย that was found washed ashore near the Brooklyn Bridgeย as an Atlantic sturgeon.

According to Julika Wocial, a rescue program supervisor with the RFMRP, after seeing a photo of the fish the foundation told those present on the site to contact the Department of Environmental Conservation once they identified the fish as an Atlantic sturgeon.

Wocial said the Riverhead Foundation works only with turtles and marine mammals.

According to Wikipedia, the Atlantic sturgeon is, "among one of the oldest fish species in the world" and the National Marine Fisheries Services notes the fish is a "species of concern."
