Riverhead Guide to Summer Camps for Kids

With the warm weather on the way, now is the time to select a great summer program before they all fill up.

With a little less than four months left in the school year, local parents have already started planning for their kids' summer vacation.

And that means one thing: summer camp.

To help you decide, Riverhead Patch has compiled this summer camp guide featuring a host of programs in town – and many others from nearby towns – to make the job of picking the one that’s right for your kids a much easier experience.

Name: Renaissance Kids Camp

Cost: Full Camp: $475 -  $4375 based on number of weeks, or  $100 per day per week. Tiny Camp: $150 for 3 days a week, or $50 per day.  Sibling Discount of 10 percent.

Details:  Apple Day Camp offer children ages 5- 15 the chance to explore the outdoors, learning about nature and playing outdoor sports. All campers have the change to learn about horsemanship and try their hand at horseback riding. Weekly trips to Splish Splash and local beaches for campers.

Name: Hallockville Farm Museum

Cost: $275 per week, $250 per week for 2 or more weeks.
Where: Hallockville Farm Museum, 6038 Sound Ave., Riverhead.
When: July 8 - Aug. 2., weekly sessions.
Deadline for registration:  Must be paid in full by June 15.
Details: Hallockville Farm Museum is partnering with Peconic Community School to bring arts to the farm for children ages 6 - 11. There are four one-week sessions being offered: woodworking and old-fashioned toymaking, fiber arts and crafts, dramatic arts, music and movement, organic gardening and garden crafts.

Name: Long Island Science Center
Type of camp: science/educational

Where: Long Island Science Center, 11 West Main St., Riverhead.
When: July 9 - Aug. 23, age level varies by week.

Details: Long Island Science Center is offering 10 one-week long sessions for children (ages 5 - 13) to explore different scientific areas with hands-on experiments, scientific equipment and building their own models. Topics and age groups vary by week.

Details: Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County runs a 140-acre residential camp program for children entering grades 4 - 10 and a Counselor-in-Training program for ages 16 - 17. Camp activities include archery, arts and crafts, dance, drama, farm and horticulture, outdoor adventures, outdoor cooking, sports, environmental sciences and more. In-Depth programs on swimming, kayaking, soccer, music and other topics are also available.

Name: Schiff Scout Reservation

Cost:  $300 per week until March 29, $350 per week until May 31. $40 per each additional week.

Details:  Boy Scouts of America’s Theodore Roosevelt Council offers a Cub Scout Day Camp  for Tigers, Wolves, Bears, first-year Webelos and non-scout siblings ages 7 - 10. Camp activities include field sports, archery, nature, fishing, campfires and a weekly special event. Bus transportation is provided from centrally located stops in Nassau County as part of the camp fee.

East Hampton 

Location: East Hampton
Name:  Ross School
Type of camp: sports/arts/performance/science
Cost:  Full Day with lunch: $1,575 - $6,650, Half Day (no lunch): $1,350 - $5,550.

When: June 24 - Aug. 16, closed July 4.

Details: Ross School offers children ages 6 - 14 a chance to study more than 30 majors in the areas of athletics, outdoor activities, arts, media, performance, science and the innovation lab at Ross Schools. Children choose a major area to study, and full-day students choose a minor to study in afternoons. The Early Childhood Program offers a camp experience for toddlers through age 6.

Location: East Hampton
Name: Camp Karole
Type of camp: sports/arts/outdoors/religious
Cost: $715 - $4280, depending on age and number of weeks. $250 daily.
Where: Jewish Center of the Hamptons, 44 Woods Lane, East Hampton.
When: July 1 - Aug. 23
Deadline for registration:  5 percent discount by March 5, Tuition paid in full by June 3.
Details: For the past 31 years, Camp Karole offers a summer camp experience for children ages 3-12. Children will get swimming instruction, sports, drama, arts and crafts, and take off-campus field trips. Every Friday, there is a musical and storytelling Shabbat service but all faiths are welcome.

Details: Pathfinder Country Day Camp in Montauk is an accredited summer day camp for ages  located on five acres overlooking Fort Pond Lake. It dates to 1965 and offers swimming, baseball, basketball, arts and crafts, tennis, and even archery. They offer transportation and lots of fun special events.

Cost: Girl Scouts $450 - $625 per week, Non-Girl Scouts: $480 - $655 per week.

Details:  Camp Blue Bay is one of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County's  sleep-away summer camp for girls, provides that traditional summer camp experience with campers sleeping on cots or tents, making campfires, and having cookouts. Campers can sign up for theme weeks to select their activities.

Name: Hamptons Music Sessions

Name: Camp Gan Israel

Where: Two locations: Southampton Montessori School, 135 Saint Andrews Road, Southampton. Second Location:  Southampton Stony Brook, 239 Montauk Hwy, Southampton.

Details: Camp Gan Israel provides a summer camp experience for Jewish children in the Hampton. The day camp offers sports, athletic competitions, and creative arts programs for children: Mini-Gan (ages 2 - 4), Junior Divisions (ages 5 - 8), Pioneer Division (ages 9 - 10), and Counselor in Training (ages 11 - 13).

Details: Camp Flying Point, run by The Flying Point Foundation for Autism, is a summer camp for children with autism ages 6 - 17 to develop social and communication skills alongside their typically developing peers. Campers will participate in swimming, art, yoga, music and non-competitive sports.

In addition, Young Explorers and Explorers (grades 6 - 9) will visit favorite places, use kayaks and go on field trips. Adventurer Week (grades 10 - 12) will explore eastern Long Island by hiking, biking and kayaking.
