Suffolk Notebook: Mother Nature Turns up the Heat

As Suffolk residents from Northport to Northwest Harbor seek respite from the suffocating heat, Patch sites across the county hit the streets to see how it is affecting their respective communities.

Bucking the usual trend of staying indoors and as close to the air conditioner as possible, Northport residents took to the Village Park on Friday as the week came to a close. Find out who – and more interestingly, why – this group didn't find it all that bad on Friday.

On Saturday, farmers echoed the response: the heat is harder on those working the fields than it is on the crops themselves. While temps are high, as one farmer said, "It's July. It's supposed to be hot."

Residents in Patchogue fled to the Patchogue Beach Club on Friday and down to Mascot Dock for crabbing. Staffers at the beach club said the beach was "packed out," resulting in excess parking on neighboring streets.

About 20 riders in the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride from Babylon Town Hall to Overlook Beach were reported to have suffered some minor medical issues on Friday. More than 1,000 people participated in the event, which benefited wounded service members.

Power Outages Deprive Thousands of Electric

Thousands of Suffolk County residents went without power for hours Friday afternoon into Friday night. , more than 700 residents were reported to be out of power at one point.  saw close to 350 power outages, while more than 500 were without power  at one time. Southampton reported.
