Major Gen. Irene Trowell-Harris, director of the Center for Women Veterans, offered the keynote address at the 32nd Annual Memorial Day Service at Calverton National Cemetery.

According to her biography on the Veterans Affairs website, Trowell-Harris has been in her current position for the past decade prior to serving 38 years in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Air National Guard. She was the first African-American woman to achieve the rank of general in the National Guard.

Hundreds were on hand to pay their respects as Rep. Tim Bishop, D-Southampton, and Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter spoke before Trowell-Harris.
