Business

Christmas Tree Shops has expressed interest in filling one of a handful of new retail spaces drawn up for Route 58, next to Riverhead Raceway, according to the project's developer.

After five years in Polish Town,  opened up shop on Tuesday morning for the first time on East Main Street in downtown Riverhead.

Government

After a discussion on , a majority of Riverhead Town Board members came to the consensus at Thursday's work session that they don't share the same views as hired planning firm BFJ Planning on one suggestion, and would prefer to see an 18-acre parcel next to CVS in Wading River hold its current zoning.

Last week, the day after Supervisor Sean Walter and Councilman John Dunleavy , the supervisor petitioned the Office of the Comptroller to audit Riverhead Town.

: One year after raising rates on the S92 bus line to offer Sunday service, Suffolk County is likely to bump fares once again. The 2012 budget has in it an assumed increase from $2 to $2.25. The increase is expected to raise $1 million.

Former Riverhead Supervisor Phil Cardinale, who most recently , has stated that after taking a break from the political cycle, he may take a run at the state level in 2014.

Community

: Jason Hefter, class of Riverhead High School class of 1990, pitched his first novel - Hump Day - as a screenplay for a movie. After Hollywood executives said it was "way too weird" he went another route and made a book out of it.

: Antonio DeGrasse, a former Riverhead High School principal for nearly 30 years, sat down with Riverhead Patch for a question and answer session about his tenure, what brought him to Riverhead in the first place, and what the public can learn from a Harvard-educated professional basketball player.

School

: The Riverhead Blue Waves girls' basketball team continued its run and took home the Suffolk County Class AA title on Tuesday with a win over Hauppauge. The Lady Blue Waves will go on to play Baldwin in the state semifinals on Friday, March 9.

 While the news delivered Wednesday night - that the r - was not optimistic by any means, it could be worse, said Superintendent Nancy Carney. Should the school board fail to get a budget passed, another $2.5 million to $3 million would have to be cut to comply with a zero budget.

Police/Fire

: According to police reports, Christiene Dacosta was driving southbound on Route 24, near the intersection of Long Neck Boulevard, when she was stopped around 3:45 a.m. Police said she failed to maintain her lane of travel, and had a five-year-old in the car with her.

Four Riverhead teens were arrested for an apparent burglary spree in Mattituck early Friday morning, after a Southold Town Police officer stopped the vehicle they were riding in for a traffic violation on New Suffolk Avenue in Mattituck, police said.

Cops are searching for spray paint-wielding suspects relating to an incident that occurred between Feb. 19 and Feb. 20. Police said 25 neighbors on streets near Maple Avenue complained that their fences, mailboxes, homes and vehicles were all targets of a suspect or suspects who used spray paint to mark private property with the tags "AOC" and "SLANG."
