Weekly Wrap-Up: St. Isidore Dodges Catholic School Cuts

On Tuesday the Town Board voted 3 to 2 to agree to a settlement in a $1 million lawsuit filed against the town by Wading River home owners who demanded the town keep trespassers off their beach property. Opponents of the settlement said the terms, which would recognize the property as that of the homeowners and prevent fishermen and ATV drivers from trespassing, would violate their right to access the beach. Supervisor Sean Walter said the settlement changes nothing and only reaffirms what's already in the town code.

On Wednesday, Patch reported that the Diocese of Rockville Centre announced three East End Catholic grammar schools, including St. Isidore in Riverhead, would work together to remain open. The diocese closed six schools across Long Island due to low enrollment.

A heavy rainstorm late Wednesday night left 350 Riverhead residents without power on Thursday. Winds were predicted to reach speeds of 55 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

An independent marketing and zoning study presented to the Town Board on Thursday suggested that the Enterprise Park at Calverton be divided up into four mixed-use zones to maximize the potential of the property. A casino, a racetrack or an airport were all unfeasible options, the study said.

An 18-year-old man who police said was the shooter in two unrelated shootings in downtown and Polish town in November was indicted by a Suffolk County grand jury on assault and weapons charges. The grand jury lowered an attempted murder charge related to the second shooting to second-degree assault.
