Weekly Wrap-Up: Downtown Home Invasion, Black Friday Shopping

A round-up of the biggest news in Riverhead during the week of Nov. 20.

On Monday, Patch reported that the U.S. Navy had begun drilling new testing sites south of an underground plume of contaminated groundwater to measure the extent of the pollution. The sites, located farther south than previous testing areas south of River Road will monitor chemical concentrations of solvents and jet fuel dumped in the area when it was used as a Grumman defense plant.

Former Riverhead football player Miguel Maysonet was named the Big South Offensive Player of the Year, on Tuesday afternoon. The junior running back at Stony Brook University shattered single-season school records this year, rushing for 1,485 yards and 15 touchdowns in his second season with the Seawolves.

The Town of Riverhead announced that Moody's reaffirmed the town's "Aa2" credit rating on Wednesday. The rating, the third-highest the agency awards, allows the town to borrow money at a lower cost, and enables them to sell $22 million in bonds on Nov. 29.

Riverhead Police are searching for three men who entered an East Avenue home with a handgun and demanded money on Thanksgiving Eve. The three black men, described as being in their early 20s and dressed in black, fled the scene after a resident at the home "struggled" with them. The suspects remain at large.

On Saturday, Patch posted a photo gallery of Black Friday across Riverhead. Black Friday started early at many stores this year, with shopping outlets like Walmart and Tanger opening up late Thanksgiving night.
