Weekly Wrap-Up: Armed Robbery Downtown, Walter Meets With Regal

A round-up of the biggest news in Riverhead during the week of Nov. 13.

On Sunday night two unknown suspects robbed an East Main Street grocery store across the street from Town Hall at gunpoint, stealing between $800 and $900 in cash. The suspects remain at large.

After two shootings and an armed robbery, Town Supervisor Sean Walter vowed on Tuesday to increase police patrols downtown and in Polish Town to "push these [criminals] out of town" and called the recent violence "unacceptable."

During Tuesday's Town Board meeting, the Board and members of local civic associations argued over a proposed 150-foot breezeway to be built at the in Jamesport. Civics said the breezeway was an attempt to exploit a loophole in town code; members of the Town Board said they have heard no objections to the breezeway outside the few from civic association members.

Patch reported on Wednesday that an aquaculturist at the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center made history by becoming the first to successfully breed a reef basslet, a rare fish worth up to $1,000 each, in captivity. Though the biologist admitted the process is not economical yet, he hopes that improvements would help reduce the number of fish captured from the wild to be sold at aquariums.

On Thursday evening, Town Supervisor Sean Walter visited an Regal Entertainment Group open-house just outside Albany. Walter, developer Ron Parr and Regal have been in talks recently . Walter said he is confident the three sides can reach a deal.
