Video: The Big Duck Lighting

One of the community's most beloved events took place Thursday night as the Big Duck in Flanders was lit in all its holiday finery.

The event, which took place at the Big Duck on Flanders Road, brought out a slew of residents, who welcomed Santa, who helped light the duck.

According to the Friends of the Big Duck website, The Big Duck, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was the vision of Long Island duck farmer Martin Maurer.

The Big Duck was designed by Broadway set designers the Collins Brothers, and created by locals George Reeve, John Smith, and Merlin Yeager in 1931, according to the site.

Although it was originally sited in Riverhead, the Big Duck was moved three times and now sits near the Big Duck Ranch.
