What is Long Island Green Homes?

Long Island residents can take part in an innovative program that will reduce their home’s energy costs and improve energy efficiency sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA) Green Jobs/Green New York and Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®. About the program: Complete your application online at https://cmsapps.nyserda.ny.gov/HPAudit/ and schedule your home’s energy audit with a Building Performance Institute (BPI) accredited contractor. Most households qualify for a free or reduced cost energy audit. The audit will include many diagnostic tests to see what improvements can be made to make your home more energy efficient, including:  -Assessing existing insulation  -Conducting a blower door test to measure the amount of air leaking in and out of the home -Evaluating your home’s heating, cooling, and hot water systems -Checking appliance and lighting efficiency  -Performing a health and safety inspection The contractor will provide you with a report based on your audit containing a list of recommended improvements along with their costs and the estimated energy savings. Working with the contractor you can decide what improvements you would like to install. Every improvement can result in significant energy savings. Some examples are: -Insulation and air sealing -Energy efficient lighting -Upgrades or replacement of heating and hot water systems After the work is completed, the same diagnostic tests are completed that were used during the energy audit to verify the new improvements are working properly.
