5-Year-Old Boy Struck By Pickup In Riverhead

Injuries not life-threatening, police say.

A five-year-old boy was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a pickup truck in Riverhead Wednesday night.

Riverhead Town Police were called to the scene of the accident at Horton Avenue and the Middle Road traffic circle intersection at approximately 8 p.m., after receiving a call that a child had been struck by a vehicle.

According to police, Cornelius M. Trent, 41, of Flanders, was allegedly driving his 1997 Mazda B2300 pickup north on Horton Avenue, just north of the traffic circle, when the child, a Riverhead resident who police did not identify, entered the travel portion of the roadway.

The child was allegedly hit by the pickup truck when Trent was unable to stop, police said, and sustained bruising and lacerations from the impact. Police said he was being held overnight at the hospital as a precaution.

No charges were filed against the driver of the pickup.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance emergency responders on the scene directed the child be airlifted by Suffolk County helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment.
