Alleged Meltdown On Bus Lands Riverside Man Behind Bars

The following arrests were reported by the Southampton Town Police Department and New York State Troopers over the past week. A charge is an accusation. Defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Northampton

• Eileen Spillane, 53, of Center Moriches was arrested on Nov. 2, charged with drunk driving. According to police Spillane was driving a 2004 Honda Accord south on County Road 51 near Speonk-Riverhead Road at around 9:30 p.m. when she was seen weaving in and out of her lane, driving onto the shoulder of the road and tailgating other motorists. She was stopped and police detected a strong odor of alcohol on her breath. Police said she also had slurred speech and performed poorly on a field sobriety test. She refused to submit to a breathalyzer. Spillane was arrested and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, moving lanes unsafely, following too closely, driving on the shoulder and refusing to submit to a test, all violations.

Flanders

• Two men were arrested in Flanders on drug charges after police discovered them parked in a known drug location on Oct. 29. According to police a 38-year-old Flanders man and a 35-year-old Riverhead man were sitting in a 1997 Jeep, which was parked on Point Road at around 9:30 p.m. When police searched the vehicle they discovered a quantity of crack cocaine and a crack pipe in a pink Puma bag laying on the floor of the passenger seat. The 35-year-old defendant in the driver’s seat was found to be in possession of marijuana. He was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. The 38-year-old man in the passenger seat was charged with misdemeanor seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Riverside

• William Canel, 29, of Riverside was arrested in Riverside after police said he threatened his wife with a pair of knives on Nov. 3. According to police Canel was involved in an argument with his wife at around 11:15 p.m. when he grabbed two knives. Fearing for her safety, his wife called 911. Police responded and took Canel into custody. He’s being charged with second-degree menacing and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, both misdemeanors.

• A Riverside man was arrested on Oct. 31 after he allegedly flew into a rage on a Suffolk County bus in Riverside. According to police the 21-year-old was a passenger on the bus traveling along County Road 51 at around 11 a.m. when he got upset that he wasn’t able to get off the bus where he wanted to. Police said that’s when he kicked the rear door of the bus a number of times, damaging it. The man was arrested and charged with criminal mischief in the fourth-degree, a misdemeanor.

Riverhead

• A convicted sex offender who last reported to be living in the DSS trailers in Riverhead was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Amityville and charged for failing to register his new address, a class D felony. According to police 54-year-old Carl Graves, a level-2 sex offender was brought into Town of Southampton Police Headquarters and held for arraignment on Nov. 1 in violation of the sex offender registration act. Graves was originally convicted of second-degree rape in May of 2003 for a crime involving a 14-year-old female victim. He was sentenced to one year in county jail and is required by law to register whenever he changes his address.
