An Aquebogue man has been charged with drunken driving after an accident that killed a 56-year-old woman delivering newspapers in Hampton Bays early on Sunday morning, Southampton Town police said.

Detective Sgt. Lisa Costa said Joseph Perez, 31, was behind the wheel of a 2001 Ford pickup truck, heading west on Montauk Highway, when he struck Donna Sartori, a Middle Island resident, and two parked cars in the shoulder at 4:24 a.m. The accident occurred just west of Ponquogue Avenue.

His truck hit a parked car, then Sartori, and then her parked vehicle, police said. Sartori was standing near her car when she was struck, Costa said. Exactly where she was standing is still be investigated.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Perez was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead with non-life threatening injuries, Costa said.

He is being charged with driving while intoxicated. More serious charges are likely.

Southampton Town police, the New York State Police Forensic ID & Collision Reconstruction Unit, and the Hampton Bays Fire Department responded to the scene.

Late Sunday morning, when police had already left the scene, a Honda Accord with minor damage to its rear driver's side was left behind at the accident site, in front of Gators Restaurant. Pieces of the other vehicles involved were strewn on the snow-filled sidewalk in front of the Accord, as well as patches of blood.

Asked if Perez has ever been arrested before, Costa said, "Not in regards to DWI."

Southampton Town Detectives are asking anyone who may have information about the crash to contact the Southampton Town Detectives at 631-702-2230. or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

why is it that the driver, "murderer" always sustains non-life threatening injuries while leaving innocent people to die or critically injured? I used to love driving, now I'm leery of driving anywhere these days. Too bad. Hope karma gets it right at some point.

I feel horrible for anyone who losses a life over someone being inresponsible. However I have known mr perez for years and despite this terrible tragedy he is a good man and father.being a single father to his son for years, also trying to better himself by going back to college. While I do not condone what he has done. He is still a person who made a horrible mistake that he can never take back and will carry with him for the rest of his life. My heart goes out to donna and her family. And my prayers are with jose and his family.

I'm not saying that he his right by any means but good people do horrible things sometimes. He made a life changing decision that took the life of your family member and nothing can change that. He made the choice to get in the car and drive. If you read it. I never said that I condone what he did. But he has done some good in his life like being single father and trying to make a better life for his son. Also he is a US citizen..so just a side note. While I may make u sick the fact remains that there will be justice but served as it should. But this POS as you call him had a life before this careless and reckless decision and in that life he was good person. I'm not going to argue about this..but I have my opinion and you have your.I'm going to stand by my friend. Again my condolences to you and your family and my prayers are with both families

So very sorry for your loss. Time helps, but never takes away the pain. May God be with you and your family at this sad time. I hope the driver doesn't get off and serves the time that he should. He has to meet his maker one day and answer to Him as well.
