Bellone: 'This Was a Very Dangerous Fire' [VIDEO]

Suffolk County executive says Tuesday's brush fire was a close call.

Suffolk County Executive Bellone called a "very dangerous fire" that fire departments were able to get under control before it wrought havoc on local residences.

Bellone said the blaze prompted the evacuation of 300 homes and one day care center before being snuffed out.

A few years ago, I saw a woodchuck grazing by the entrance ramp. Hope he survived OK as well.

Really? Not funny if you lived over here. We had the sprinklers running and pulled together our "valuables". I wasn't even allowed to drive to my own home, so I parked my car and walked a mile to check on our house and dog. Think of how scared those children in the day care center were? Thank you again to the Manorville Fire Department and other departments that came out to fight this blaze. Way too close for comfort and a serious situation!

Catherine, Thank you for your comment. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko commended the firefighters for their bravery in handling a potentially very dangerous situation. Through their efforts, there were no injuries.

I just want to thank our volunteer firefighters for their bravery in fighting these fires. I think Long Island needs to look to New Jersey and how they manage their pine barrens, by doing controlled burning in winter, it prevents wildfires like these. We need to have a paid forest service like New Jersey has. These men and women deserve to be paid for the hard work they are doing!
