Black Ice on Roads; Officals Urge Residents to Stay Home

Residents are urged to be careful on steps and walkways, slick with black ice.

As slick roads froze into deadly black ice Tuesday night, Riverhead Town officials urged residents to stay home.

Highways crews were out working Tuesday night, said Riverhead Town police. Conditions are expected to improve overnight as temperatures climb, police said in a release.

Walkways and steps were also covered with black ice; officials said if residents had to leave their homes, they should exercise extreme caution and greatly reduce speeds when driving.

"If you can, stay home and stay safe," the release read.
