Busload of Prisoners Stranded On Expressway

The inmates were unable to make it back to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility.

A busload of prisoners headed back to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside Friday hit a detour when Mother Nature pummeled the Long Island Expressway with snow.

According to Suffolk County Sheriff's Office Chief of Staff Michael Sharkey, the bus was traveling from Central Islip, where the inmates had court appointments, back to the correctional facility.

"The bus was unable to reach Riverhead as the expressway was impassable and the inmates were returned to Central Islip until Saturday," Sharkey said.

On Friday, the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway were closed to all non-emergency vehicles in Suffolk County due to the severe weather.
