Cops: Armed Intruder Fires Gun In Riverhead Home

Suspect lived on same street, police said.

An armed burglar broke into a Riverhead home and fired a gun, police said.

Riverhead Town police said that on Friday at 3:41 p.m., a call was received about a burglary allegedly taking place at a home located on Raynor Avenue in Riverhead.

The woman who called police said the subject that was in her house was known to her, and that he was armed with some unknown type of handgun and had fired several shots while inside the residence, police reported.

Upon arrival, police said they located the suspect in the rear year of his residence, which is also located nearby on Raynor Avenue.

Police arrested Richard Kayte, Jr., 31, of Riverhead after police said he was found to be in possession of crack cocaine and marijuana.

During the course of the investigation, police said the weapon used in the incident was located and recovered at the suspect's home.

Kayte was arrested and transported to Riverhead Town police headquarters. He was charged with burglary in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, reckless endangerment in the first degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, and criminal possession of marijuana in the fifth degree.

Kayte was held for arraignment.
