Suspect demanded wallets and cell phones, police said.

A couple leaving the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center was robbed at knifepoint on Saturday afternoon, police said.

According to Riverhead Police, the robbery took place at 4:11 p.m. near the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center parking lot on Ostrander Avenue.

The couple reported being robbed at knifepoint by a man who approached them on a bicycle as they walked from the aquarium north to the parking lot.

According to the couple, they heard a voice from behind them state, "Get out of the way," police said.

As the couple moved, the male allegedly said, "Stop right here. Give me your wallets."

When the couple hesitated, the police said the man on the bicycle pull out a short, wide knife and pointed it toward them.

After taking two wallets and cell phones, the alleged thief then rode off, heading southbound on Ostrander Avenue, police said.

Police described the robber as a black male wearing a puffy brown or black jacket, with the hood up, on a bicycle. No other description was immediately available. Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the Riverhead Police at 631-727-4500.

Sick of these skels, can usually spot them approaching citizens for money with some story, need diapers for the kids, can't get home, no gas etc etc etc. Places a bad name on Riverhead, one the town has been trying to clean up.

I know they have been trying desperately to clean up Riverhead and restore stores, but until they can make it safer I won't be returning there. This happened in broad daylight, which makes that even more upsetting.

It always has to become a race thing, huh Rico? Just as easy to spot as a white male with a military rifle in a movie theater or an elementary school!

I have been considering a move there myself for some time now, but seems that there are issues there and elsewhere on Long Island. I moved back out here last year after 30 years in NYC and may head back where it's safe!
