Cops: Empty House Crasher Responsible for Car Break-Ins

Police say a Riverhead teen who reportedly threw a party at a vacant Flanders home also admitted to stealing from a string of cars in the area.

According to Southampton Police, more charges will "absolutely" be forthcoming for a Riverhead High School student who they say admitted to breaking into several cars in the Flanders area recently before throwing a party at a vacant home in the area.

Seventeen-year-old Bhavesh Hasarafally was arrested last Saturday after police found a backpack at a Huntington Lane home, they said, leading them his way. Cops had originally been tipped off on a party at the house after a neighbor, aware the home was supposed to be out of use, had more than a few strange visitors. Police said Hasarafally had even advertised the party on Facebook.

Following the incident, Hasarafally was originally charged with second-degree burglary, a felony, as well as criminal trespass in the second degree, and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, both misdemeanors.

Inside his backpack, according to police, could be the contents of stolen property belonging to the car break-in victims, which police are currently in the process of investigating.

Det. Sgt. Lisa Costa said on Wednesday that Hasarfally admitted to breaking into the cars. Police reports stated that at least five cars in the area, between May 29 and 31, were reported to have been broken into.

Victims said car insurance cards and car registrations, an iPod, and even a Hotel Transylvania DVD were stolen from the lot.
