Cops: Homeless Man Beaten With Hammer During Assault

The incident was the second involving an injured homeless man this week, police said.

A homeless man was beaten with a hammer during an assault in Riverhead on Thursday, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, Peconic Bay Medical Center emergency room staff notified authorities on Thursday at 3:42 a.m. that a patient being treated said he had been injured during a physical assault.

The victim, a homeless man, 27, told police that he had been assaulted with a hammer by an acquaintance on Roanoke Avenue, police said.

Detectives responded to the scene and conducted an investigation into the alleged assault, police said.

On Saturday, Efrain A. Amaya, 22, of Riverhead, was arrested and charged with assault in the second degree, a felony. He was arraigned and remanded to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 bail, police said.

The incident was the second last week involving an injured homeless man; police responded to the scene of a homeless man found lying on the roadside on Friday.
