Cops: Man Crashed Car Into Utility Pole, Charged With DWI

The accident closed Route 24 overnight between Evergreen Road and Wood Road Trail in Flanders.

A man who hit and knocked down a utility pole on Route 24 in Flanders was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, Calverton resident Daniel R Halstead, 22, was involved in a motor vehicle accident, during which he struck a utility pole on New York State Route 24 near Glider Ave in Flanders.

Police said the collision caused wires to fall, forcing Route 24 to be closed overnight between Evergreen Road and Wood Road Trail, until Long Island Power Authority representatives could respond.

The road remained closed Thursday morning.

Police said Halstead was found to be intoxicated by responding officers and was placed under arrest. He was uninjured in the crash and was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated.  He was held overnight for morning arraignment.
