Cops: Man With Machete Charged With 'Terroristic Threat' At Tanger

A man had a machete in this backpack and wanted to "hurt people," police said.

A man with a machete was arrested at the Tanger Outlet Center in Riverhead on Tuesday and charged with making "terroristic threats," police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, on Tuesday at 12:43 p.m., a call was received about a man at Tanger who allegedly had a machete.

The man said he wanted to hurt people and himself, police said.

Riverhead police responded and found John Medina, 32, of Mastic, who had a machete in his backpack, authorities said. He told officers that he wanted to "hurt people," police said.

Medina was arrested and charged with making a terroristic threat, police said, as well as criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. He was transported to the Riverhead town police department and processed, arraigned, and then remanded to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility.
