In tandem with U.S. Marshals and the Suffolk County Police Special Victims Unit, East End Police Departments recently visited five dozen convicted sex offenders at their homes, finding 55 out of the 60 were in compliance with the state's Sex Offender Registry Act.
According to Riverhead Police, all 19 sex offenders living in Riverhead were in compliance with the law, and the five who were found in violation were subsequently found and arrested by officials and are being prosecuted by the Suffolk County DA's Office.
Officials dubbed the sweep "Operation Lighthouse," and the checks were completed from July 9 through July 13.
The DA's Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Charles Dunne, U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of New York, released the following statement: "We know that the population of the East End can more than double during the summer months and we want to make sure we are doing everything possible to keep our children safe."
