Cops: Shooting, Armed Robbery Reported Monday Night in Riverhead

Police reported a shooting and an armed robbery in Riverhead Monday night.

Police were on the scene investigating both a shooting and an attempted armed robbery that took place in Riverhead Monday night -- but the two incidents are unrelated, officials said.

According to Riverhead Town police, shots were fired on Raynor Avenue at 8:20 p.m. on Monday. A female was shot with bird shot, a type of shotgun shell, police said; she was brought to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment. Police were searching for a subject who was still at large Monday night.

In the second incident, a robbery was reported at 8:46 p.m. at International Connection, a store on Osborn Avenue. An individual allegedly entered the store with some type of handgun or weapon, police said. A fight ensued inside the business. Police apprehended one man, who has not yet been identified. The individual, police said, was Spanish-speaking and an interpreter was needed. The suspect was brought to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of facial lacerations, police said.

Employees of the store were being interviewed at Riverhead police headquarters Monday night.

No further information about either incident was immediately available.
