Corrections Officer Allegedly Shoots Intruder in His Riverhead Home

Police charged suspect with burglary.

A Suffolk County corrections officer allegedly shot an intruder after he confronted him in his Riverhead home, police say.

According to Riverhead Town Police, they received a call at approximately 4:40 a.m. on Saturday morning from John Kwasna, 45, of Old Farm Road in Riverhead, stating that he confronted a man in his home.

It is unclear whether the alleged intruder was armed.ย

Kwasna, who was armed with a handgun, allegedly fired a shot as the individual ran towards him.

The suspect, identified as Thomas Anderson, 33, was located by police a short distance from the scene with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was arrested by Riverhead Town Police and charged with burglary in the second degree.

Police said Anderson was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center and subsequently, to Stony Brook University Medical Center, for treatment.

Kwasna is a 20 year veteran of the Suffolk County Corrections Department.
