East Main Street Opens Back up After Gas Line Break

The River Pointe Apartments were evacuated, as were private homes and businesses in the area, after a gas service line was ruptured on Wednesday afternoon.

Police and fire units evacuated apartments and homes downtown and shut off a portion of East Main Street after a gas service line was ruptured Wednesday afternoon.

Police said a call reporting the break came in at 2:37 p.m. National Grid arrived at 821 East Main St. shortly after 3 p.m.

Police evacuated the River Pointe apartments, nearby homes, and closed businesses in the area while gas crews worked to fix the break.

East Main Street was closed at Howell Avenue to the west and on the easterly side of the apartments, and opened back up around 4:15 p.m. Residents of nearby homes and apartments were also allowed back in at that time.

Lt. David Lessard said that a private contractor pulling up some tree stumps on the property of River Pointe Apartments cut into the line, which ruptured it. However he added that Riverhead Fire Marshals are investigating the incident.
