High Speed Chase Through Polish Town Results in Felony DWI Charge

Defendant remanded without bail; due in court on Jan. 25.

State Police reported on Thursday that a high speed chase through Polish Town resulted in a felony DWI arrest on Wednesday night.

According to police, state troopers responded to a car accident on Flanders Road in Riverside around 11:40 Wednesday night. Upon arrival, a blue Audi was observed stuck in a snowbank, and after police activated their emergency lights the car allegedly maneuvered out of the snow, accelerated past the squad car, and sped away.

Reports state that a high speed chase ensued, and after the driver was unable to turn at the intersection of Swezey Avenue and Duane Street, the car crashed into a fence and a small tree. The subject then fled on foot, and was tracked down soon after on Marcy Avenue.

Christopher Anstett, 39, of Riverhead, was arrested for felony DWI, unlawful fleeing from police in the third degree, and several traffic violations. He was remanded in Riverhead Justice Court without bail, and is due to return to court on Jan. 25.
