Incident Report: Copper Stolen, Hit-and-Run

A weekly round-up of reported crimes and suspicious incidents from the :

Burglary

• An oil burner repairman reported Jan. 3 that he responded to a low fuel alarm at a Point Road, Flanders home and discovered copper pipe missing from the basement, and someone had pried a glass slider door to the home open.

Criminal Mischief

• A Flanders man on Brookhaven Avenue reported Jan. 8 that sometime overnight someone knocked his mailbox off the post. He told police that he does not have any problems with anybody in the area, “and is unaware of anyone that would want to do this to him,” police said. Police checked the area and surrounding streets and found no other mailboxes damaged, according to the incident report.

• A Flanders man reported Jan. 6 that someone damaged his safe in an attempt to break into it. According to the incident report, the man had several family members and friends either staying over or coming and going.

Leaving the Scene of an Accident

• A Westhampton Beach man reported Jan. 6 that while driving northbound on Center Drive in Riverside, a white Ford Explorer SUV also heading north cut him off, causing a collision and damage to his vehicle. According to the incident report, the van then fled toward the Flanders traffic circle.

Assault

• A Calverton man reported to police on Jan. 8 that while leaving his friend’s Flanders home he was attacked by the friend’s ex-boyfriend, who punched him several times, causing him to fall off steps and cut his right hand. The man was treated at Peconic Bay medical Center, according to the incident report.
