Jamesport Fire Department Run Kicks Off

For the first time, a 5K run added.

Scores of emergency responders will be racing on Sunday -- but not to a burning fire.

Instead, the firefighters and other supporters will be gathered to participate in the Jamesport Fire Department 5K and 10K Run, which is organized in memory of Commissioner Edward "Big Ed" Collins, who died last year.

Runners race from the Long Island Sound to the Peconic Bay. The 5K race kicks off at the Jamesport Firehouse on Manor Lane; the 10K starts at Iron Pier Beach.

The race begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday, with categories for male and female runners: 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80 and over. A special category for fire department and peace/police officers is also included.

The event includes T-shirts for all participants, a post-race raffle, food and refreshments, and music by "Just the 2 of Us."
