Jamesport Man Pleads Guilty After Injuring Cop in Car Chase

A Jamesport man who reportedly tried to flee police in December and injured a police officer during a crash following a car chase, pleaded guilty before Judge Stephen Braslow at Suffolk County criminal court on Monday.

Edward Ferger, 47, is charged with felony assault in the second degree, as well as vehicular assault in the second degree. He was indicted by a Suffolk County grand jury in March.

In the was injured; his cruiser was totaled. According to Police Chief David Hegermiller, as a result of the accident he lacerated his spleen, broke his leg, and suffered herniated discs in his neck. The 33-year-old was placed on medical leave.

Police reports state that on Dec. 11, Ferger was driving slowly up and down Herricks Lane in a white van. After police attempted to stop the van, according to reports, Ferger fled westbound on Sound Avenue, at which point the van collided with Schneider's vehicle.

Ferger remains held on $100,000 cash or $25,000 bond bail. He is due back in court for sentencing on September 10.

According to police and court reports, Ferger also led police on a chase in July of 2011, resulting in more than 20 violations which remain outstanding in Riverhead Justice Court. Police reports state that on July 2, Ferger was caught police after he was pulled over and attempted to flee on foot. He was charged with resisting arrest, driving while impaired by drugs, and several vehicle and traffic violations.
