Jamesport Man Who Reportedly Fled, Injured Cop, Held on $100k Bail

A Jamesport man who reportedly tried to flee police in December, and during a car chase hospitalized a police officer in a car crash, was indicted by a Suffolk County Grand Jury last week and remains held at Suffolk County Corrctional Facility.

Edward Ferger, 46, is charged with felony assault in the second degree, as well as vehicular assault in the second degree. 

In the Dec. 11 accident Riverhead Police Officer Charles Schneider was injured, as his cruiser was totaled. According to Police Chief David Hegermiller, as a result of the accident he lacerated his spleen, broke his leg, and suffered herniated discs in his neck. The 33-year-old remains out on medical leave.

Police reports state that on Dec. 11, Ferger was driving slowly up and down Herricks Lane in a white van. After police attempted to stop the van, according to reports, Ferger fled westbound on Sound Avenue, at which point the van collided with Schneider's vehicle.

Ferger remains held on $100,000 cash or $25,000 bond bail. He is due back in court on April 18.

According to police and court reports, Ferger also led police on a chase in July of 2011, resulting in more than 20 violations which remain outstanding in Riverhead Justice Court. Police reports state that on July 2, Ferger was caught police after he was pulled over and attempted to flee on foot. He was charged with resisting arrest, driving while impaired by drugs, and several vehicle and traffic violations.
