WATCH: Jamesport Parade Goes Marching In

Two local marines were honored as grand marshalls of the 56th annual parade after returning from tours of duty in Afghanistan.

The 56th annual Jamesport Fire Department Parade featured a pair of special guests: two Aquebogue U.S. Marine veterans who recently returned home from Afghanistan. Both were honored by local politicians for their service and sacrifice on Wednesday night.

Marine Corporal Alfred Grossklaus Jr. and Corporal Robert Peeker were named co-Grand Marshalls of the parade by fire officials and presented with awards recognizing their service, drawing loud cheers from the crowd that lined the streets to see the parade.

Cpl. Grossklaus, who received a Purple Heart after he was wounded on June 26, was still recovering from his injuries and rode in a red Corvette while Cpl. Peeker wore his uniform and marched alongside.

The parade also featured fire trucks, local police officers, volunteer firefighters, and representatives from Polish Town in Riverhead. An Aquebogue Tae Kwon Do school, Extreme Martial Arts, and a Wading River Irish dance school held demonstrations before the parade began.

The carnival continues through Saturday, ending in an annual fireworks display late Saturday night.
