Main Street Reopened Following Gas Leak

The evacuation took place after construction workers caused a gas line breakage at 10:45 a.m.

East and West Main Streets have been reopened following a gas leak on Tuesday morning.

A section of Main Street in downtown Riverhead was evacuated Tuesday morning after a gas service pipe was damaged by a National Grid contractor.

The break happened at 10:47 a.m. near the at the corner of Main Street and Peconic Avenue, according to police. Businesses around the break were evacuated and police closed West Main Street from Peconic to Griffing Avenue and Roanoke Avenue up to First street.

There were no reported injuries from the incident, police said.

"We're expecting it'll be about another hour [until the break is fixed]," said Riverhead detective Timothy Hubbard at the time.

National Grid spokesperson Wendy Ladd said the break occurred in a much smaller service pipe as the contractors were replacing a gas main. Ladd said National Grid is still investigating the incident to see if the gas line was properly marked.

The road work on Main Street is part of a along Route 25 that began an overnight construction period on Monday night. Department of Transportation officials expect the road work to be done by the end of November.
