Man Held Without Bail After Stabbing in Riverside

Victim taken to hospital with 2-inch wound in his back.

A Riverside man was jailed without bail Aug. 11 after being arrested for stabbing a man in the back, according to Southampton Town police.

Police said James J. Ayers, 38, of Riverhead, assaulted a man outside the victim's Riverside home on Ludlam Avenue. When officers arrives at the scene, the victim was found sitting on a chair in the living room, next to the front door, with a 2-inch stab would in his lower right shoulder, bleeding and having trouble breathing.

Flanders Volunteer Ambulance took the victim to Peconic Bay Medical Center in stable condition.

Witnesses told police that Ayers — who was an ex-boyfriend of one of the witnesses — approached a vehicle they were sitting in and confronted them. A little later, Ayers stabbed the victim outside the house and fled, according to an incident report.

Town police detectives and a Suffolk County sheriff's office K-9 unit searched for the suspect. Police said the assault occurred at 12:50 a.m. on Aug. 11 and Ayers was arrested at 4:06 a.m. down the block.

Ayers was charged with first-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies. He was arraigned at Southampton Town Justice Court in Hampton Bays.
