Motorcyclist in Flanders Crash Charged with DWI

Southampton police say the man was racing another motorcycle when he lost control and crashed, injuring himself and his passenger.

A Westhampton man has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated, third-degree assault and several other traffic offenses after he was involved in a motorcycle crash that left he and his passenger injured on July 14, police said.

Police said that Robert Rogers, 48, was racing another motorcycle on County Road 105 when he lost control of his Harley Davidson and crashed into the grass median. Both Rogers and his passenger, Melody Clifford, 39, of Westhampton, were tossed from the bike.

Clifford was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, while Rogers' injuries were more serious, according to a police statement. No further information is available as to the extent of the injuries.

Police said Rogers was found to be intoxicated and was driving with a suspended license. He was released from police custody to be treated at Peconic Bay Medical Center.

The crash caused traffic delays on County Road 105 following the accident as police, fire officials and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance crews responded to the crash and set up flares. By 10 p.m. the road was clear and traffic was moving smoothly.
