On Saturday, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. residents can head to the Riverhead Town Police Station at 210 Howell Avenue, to properly dispose of expired or unwanted prescription medications. Discarding old or unused medications in the trash or flushing them down the toilet is not a safe method of getting rid of them, police say.

The effort, which is being orchestrated in conjunction with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, comes on the heels of a presentation given at Riverhead High School Thursday night, about the dangers of and the number of teens who say they are easily obtainable in homes.
