National Night Out: Communities Standing Strong Against Crime

Residents from across the nation participate in the yearly event.

Across the United States, communities are taking a stand against crime.

And in Riverhead, police are asking residents to galvanize and gather in an effort to keep communities safe.

On Tuesday, Riverhead Town police will participate in the 30th Annual National Night Out.

Police are asking area residents to join in and observe America’s night out against crime.

The goal of the event, police said, is to heighten crime and drug awareness in neighborhoods; generate support for and participate in local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships — and to send a message to criminals, letting them know that residents are fighting back.

Tuesday's event will kick off at Riverhead Town Hall at 2 p.m., when the National Night Out poster winners will be announced.

Next, members of the Riverhead Police Department's crime prevention unit, as well as representatives from Schwing Electric and Target, will visit neighborhood watch groups that participate in National Night Out block parties.

The events will feature family-fun activities such as give-aways sponsored by Schwing Electric and Target and a visit by McGruff the Crime Dog.

Residents are asked to hold front porch vigils by leaving lights on between 7 and 10 p.m. outside their homes and joining with neighbors for block parties, barbecues, contests, and youth programs.

Contact the Riverhead Town police crime prevention unit 631-727-4500 ext. 273 for info on how to start a neighborhood watch.

Will you participate in National Night Out? What message would you like to send to criminals?
