No Injuries Reported in Calverton Basement Blaze

The fire was contained to the basement, officials said.

Firefighters were on the scene of a basement blaze on Kay Road in Calverton Tuesday afternoon.

According to Riverhead Town police, the fire was reported at 2:50 p.m. and was still active two hours later. Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corp was on standby but no injuries were initially reported, police said.

Riverhead Fire Chief Joseph Raynor said the fire was "fully involved" and residents of the house, as well as workmen, were on the scene, but all escaped the home without injury.

The fire was contained to the basement and the incident was turned over to the fire marshal for further investigation, Raynor said.

Although Wading River firefighters were in charge of the scene, Riverhead, Sound Beach, Manorville and Ridge firefighters also helped battle the blaze, Raynor said.
