Update: Police Identify Jamesport Man Run Over By Two Cars in Laurel

Two cars were involved in the accident, police said.

Police have identified the man who died on Route 25 in Laurel Thursday morning as James Callaghan, 45, of Jamesport.

Police said Callaghan was killed in a traffic accident during the pre-daylight hours Thursday morning while jogging in dense fog conditions along Route 25.

While the cause of the accident is still under investigation, police said it appeared that Callaghan was struck by two westbound vehicles. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Southold Town police and detectives, as well as personnel from Suffolk County's District Attorney's vehicular  crime bureau, crime lab, police department crime scene section, police emergency services section and the medical examiners' office, all responded to the scene.

Police said it appears that Callaghan was lying in the roadway when struck by the two vehicles. Investigators are considering the possibility that Callaghan may have been struck first by a vehicle that left the scene or that some type of medical condition or emergency caused him to be on the roadway.

Original story: A man has died after being struck by in a two car accident in Laurel, police said.

According to Southold Town police, the accident occurred at 5:45 a.m. and involved two westbound vehicles on Route 25. The male pedestrian, who police believe to be in his mid 40s, died at the scene.

An investigation is ongoing and both town police and the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office were on the scene Thursday morning. Traffic was re routed on Route 25 in Laurel in both directions.

The accident took place close to the Riverhead border on Route 25.
