UPDATE: Pedestrian Struck By Vehicle and Killed on Route 24

A 40-year-old man died after he was hit by a vehicle on the northbound side of the road.

A Riverhead man was killed Sunday after being struck by a vehicle on Route 24, according to Southampton Town Police.

Diego Ajcuc-Zurdo, 40, was struck and killed on the northbound side of the road while crossing the street near Enterprise Zone Drive in Riverside, police said in a statement. He was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center and was later identified.

Police said they have not filed charges against the driver, though they have impounded his Mercedes Benz for a safety check as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police were able to contact next-of-kin late Monday evening. Ajcuc-Zurdo is survived by a wife and child in Guatemala, according to police.
