Police: 2-Car Crash on Route 25 Sends 3 to Hospital

The head-on collision occurred around 10:40 a.m. east of Edwards Avenue.

A two-car crash on Route 25 sent three people to the hospital Sunday morning after a driver crossed the double-yellow line and struck a Hauppauge man and his wife head-on, according to Riverhead police.

Police said that Emily Bongiorno, 19, of Mt. Sinai was traveling eastbound on Route 25 east of Edwards Avenue at around 10:40 a.m. on Sunday when she crossed over the center line and struck a 2005 Jeep Laredo driven by Richard Matheson, 58, of Hauppauge, traveling in the opposite direction.

Matheson was extracted from the vehicle by the Riverhead Fire Department and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by Suffolk County Police. His wife, Jacqueline, 55, the passenger in the car, was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. An update on their condition was unavailable at the time of publication.

Bongiorno was also taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. No charges were filed in the crash, as police said they are still investigating the crash.
