Police Arrest Riverhead Man After Cross-Town Chase

Riverhead Police said they arrested 19-year-old Tremel Kelly after he fled Southampton Police, and then ran from cops in Riverhead on foot.

Riverhead Police, with the help of Southampton Police, New York State Police and a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter, located and arrested a Riverhead man Tuesday afternoon after a five-hour-long chase and search.

According to Riverhead Police Det. Tim Hubbard, 19-year-old Tremel Kelly was caught at 3:50 p.m. after a call came into Riverhead station shortly before 10:30 a.m. asking for assistance pursuing a suspect that had fled from Southampton's jurisdiction.

Southampton Police were reportedly pursuing a man wanted in relation to a stolen vehicle - later found to be Kelly, according to police - and the pursuit brought cops into the Millbrook Gables neighborhood. The driver of the vehicle then reportedly fled on foot, and was later located shortly before 4 p.m.

He was charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree and resisting arrest, and was arrested on a bench warrant. Police said he is being held for a Wednesday morning arraignment.

Kelly was one of . He was arrested on charges of criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third degree. A spokesman for the D.A. did not immediately return a request for comment.

In two separate incidents in early January, according to the Riverhead Town Justice Court, Kelly was arrested on three petit larceny charges and one charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree.
