Police: Arson Suspected on Flanders Road

Police said they will study charred wood for more evidence.

A fire at an abandoned house on Flanders Road spotted just as Irene began to batter Long Island early Sunday, may be arson, according to Southampton Town Police.

A driver identified only as “Chip” called police between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday morning to alert them of a burning building on Flanders Road. The responded to the unoccupied and abandoned structure, and a fire chief called in Southampton Town Police after discovering the blaze appeared suspicious, according to police reports.

Southampton Town Fire Marshal John Rankin took pictures and investigated, according to police. Samples of charred wood from the scene will be analyzed by the town for further evidence of arson.

According to police, there were no witnesses, leads or video surveillance tapes.
