Police: Driver, Passengers of Overturned Car Flee Scene

Accident took down a utility pole; residents without power.

An accident on East Main Street in Riverhead early Saturday morning led to an overturned car, with the driver and passengers fleeing the scene on foot, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, a motor vehicle accident occurred at 3:52 a.m. Saturday morning, taking down a utility pole directly across from the Millbrook Apartments.

The driver and passengers from the vehicle fled the scene on foot, police said. The car, which had South Carolina license plates, was impounded.

The downed pole led to loss of power on East Main Street, police said; repair trucks were on the scene Saturday morning working on the pole.

Also in Riverhead, police said, an exploded transformer on Northville Turnpike led to a loss of power for residents.
