Police: Flanders Road Closed For Three Hours After Woman Hits Pole

The 57-year-old Flanders woman was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Flanders Road was closed for three hours Friday afternoon while utility crews repaired a damaged utility pole after it was hit by a car driven by a Flanders woman, according to Southampton Town Police.

The 57-year-old woman struck the pole at the intersection of Flanders Road and Ludlam Avenue sometime around 4:27 p.m, police said. The pole split into three pieces and live electrical wires fell onto the roadway, according to a police report of the incident.

The woman was helped by a passing motorist from her car and was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

Police and the Riverhead and Flanders Fire Departments closed the road from the traffic circle in Riverside to County Road 105 while LIPA crews repaired the pole. Residents in the area also experienced about 30 minutes without power as utility crews cut power to the grid to make repairs, police said.

Southampton police said they did not plan to file charges at this time.
