Police Identify Mt. Sinai Man as Victim of Fatal Accident

Maryhaven client Brian Costello, 36, of Mt. Sinai killed on Wednesday afternoon in a crash on Sound Avenue.

Police revealed on Thursday that the victim of is Brian Costello, 36, of Mt. Sinai.

According to Sgt. Joseph Loggia of the Riverhead Police Department, Costello was a client of , the Port Jefferson-based company - which has satellite offices in Riverhead - whose bus was involved in an accident with a tractor-trailer on Wednesday afternoon.

Maryhaven is an organization that offers adult day programs, residential programs, children's programs, and work centers for special needs individuals.

Lewis Grossman, president and chief executive officer of Maryhaven, said on Thursday, "My heart and the heart of Maryhaven go out to the family. This is under police investigation." He failed to comment further, hanging up the phone.

Police said in a report early Thursday morning, "the driver of the Mack truck lost control and it began to overturn, when it struck the bus." The incident occurred on Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow, west of Edwards Avenue.

Four of the accident victims were sent to John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson and four were sent to the Peconic Medical Center in Riverhead. Loggia said he was told that the victims were treated with non-life threatening injuries.

Loggia, who was reviewing witness statements and crime scene reports on Thursday, said he is still unsure if charges will be pressed in the incident.

Police identified Robert Converse, 54, of Bellport, was driving the 2006 Mack truck, and Gary Rosset, 61, of Ridge, was driving the 2007 Ford van.

An individual with the company that owns the truck involved in the incident, Gap Leasing in East Moriches, had no comment on the matter on Thursday.
