Police said a man drove off the road, hit a utility pole, and ended up in the woods.

Riverhead police came to the aid of the victim of a single car accident in Calverton early Saturday morning.

According to Riverhead Town police, an officer on patrol at 2:30 a.m. on Route 25 in Calverton Saturday morning noticed a vehicle in a wooded area on the south side of Route 25, west of Edwards Avenue.

Upon closer inspection, the officer noticed debris in the area and realized the vehicle, a 2005 Nissan pickup truck, had been involved in an accident.

When the officer approached the vehicle, he found a single male occupant in the driver's seat, who was identified as Kenneth Fariello, 65, of Ridge; he was found to be conscious but dazed, police said.

Riverhead Volunteer ambulance personnel were requested at the scene; upon arrival, ambulance personnel reported Fariello's condition to be diminishing.

Riverhead Fire Department was request to assist with extricating the driver from the vehicle. He was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center and later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital with injuries that police said were non-life-threatening.

An investigation at the scene revealed that Fariello had been traveling westbound on Route 25 and at some point left the roadway, striking a utility pole and a dirt embankment, and coming to rest in a small patch of woods. No other vehicles were involved.
